Santorini – the precious gem of the Aegean sea. Sure you’ve heard about its breathtaking sunsets and seen pictures of its idyllic blue dome churches and white villas but what is it like actually being there? Well I will tell you that being there is just as dreamy & magical as you could have imagined.
But if you’ve never been to Santorini you’re probably wondering what else can I do besides admire the beauty of it all? I am here to share my personal experience and tips that hopefully you can use on your next trip to the dream island. The best time to visit Santorini is between late April and early November, for comfortable sightseeing.
WHERE TO STAY:
Imerovigli – My husband and I stayed in Imerovigli (a village in Santorini) on our honeymoon. It is famously called the “Balcony of the Aegean” because of its spectacular sunsets and unique hotels. We stayed at IIliovasilema Hotels and Suites which was very quaint, romantic, quiet and their hospitality was just as amazing as their balcony views. If you’re looking to get lost in romance and truly experience paradise then Imerovigli is the place for you.
Fira – If you are looking for a more upbeat atmosphere then Fira (the capital of Santorini 300 meters above the caldera – a volcanic crater submerged by the sea) is where you’ll want to be. Filled with history but also a hint of modern touch. Here you will find many amazing restaurants, touristy stores filled with greek cultures and specialities like greek honey and olive oil but you will also find a Sephora (for all my beauty lovers) and a Chinese restaurant on the nearby streets. Fira’s clifftops also offers amazing views of Nea Kameni (a still active volcanic island).
You can obviously stay at other parts of the island, but these are the two that I am most familiar with.
WHAT/WHERE TO EAT:
In Imerovigli, most restaurants are closed by 10pm with a few exceptions. Fira has more of a night life scene and more places are open later. I would definitely keep a stash of snacks in your room incase you wake up at 2am with a serious case of hunger, because chances are you won’t have easy access to food at that time.
Obviously, the Greeks are known for their seafood specifically their local sea bass, oysters, gyros, greek salads, souvlaki platters, baklava etc.
Of course there are many more fabulous restaurants on the island but without making this blog never ending, these two are my most recommended.
Let’s Eat – Situated in Imerovigli, this cozy, casual restaurant served up some of the best gyros and souvlaki platters that kept me coming back. It is the perfect affordable lunch spot that also offers takeaway.
Onar – Onar means dream and by far this was the most dreamy restaurant we went to while in Santorini. Onar is in Fira, and offers one of my favorite wine – Bottega Pelato. Imagine sipping a glass of your favorite drink while looking out at one of the most beautiful sunsets you will ever see, this is kind of feeling Onar gives you. Coupled with their intoxicating views, friendly staff and delicious fava beans, lobsters, creme brulee etc., this upscale restaurant is one of my favorite in Santorini.
SIGHTSEEING/ADVENTURES:
Some of the best views I had of Santorini was walking from Imerovigli to Fira, it’s maybe a 20-30 minute walk depending on your pace and I recommend having comfortable shoes. Walking will allow you to truly embrace the essence of the greek island. You will find hidden churches, beautiful vibrant flowers, old steps and of course an elaborate view of the caldera.
Cathedrals – If you are like me, always intrigued by old churches/cathedrals then you will definitely want to see these.
Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral in Fira was built in 1827, the cathedral sits prominently on the bottom of the town and can be seen from a distance. It offers a beautiful mosaic and bell tower. Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist is peaceful and nestled on top of a hill in Fira. It is simple, stunning and worth a visit.
Skaros Rock in Imerovigli- This is a hike that will be tough on the legs but well worth the view once you are at the top. This is best done in the morning or early evening because of cooler temperatures. The best kept secret is the little church you will find if you hike all the way to the top of the rock. Wear comfortable shoes and take your camera, water and get ready for scenery to die for.
Santorini Cable Car/Donkey Ride – Santorini Cable Car connects the port to the town of Fira/Thera. For just a few euros you can take it down to the old port, it’s the fastest way to/from the port. However the cable car runs on schedule and after a certain time in the afternoon, it doesn’t run anymore. So, if you are down on the port, you can trek your way back up to Fira or you can hop on a donkey, and go on an adventure up the stairs back to town.
Sunset Cruise – These sunset sailing cruises offered in Santorini are a must, both romantic, adventurous and certainly one of the highlights of our trip. You’ll sail past the mesmerizing Red Beach, take a mud bath in the hot springs, come back on the catamaran to sip on unlimited wine and devoured a delicious BBQ all while taking in the captivating views. You will also be able to go snorkeling before you literally sail off into the sunset with beautiful music and a scrumptious dessert.
Perivolos Beach – This black sand beach is about 12km from Fira accessible by car and the local bus (which we took). Perivolos Beach offers a plethora of things to do, from swanky bars that plays loud music all day long to water sports and volleyball. We chose parasailing as our choice of water sport, it was organized, safe, fun and exciting if you are into that sort of thing, otherwise you can just lay on the lounge chairs and enjoy the view.
NIGHTLIFE:
Fira offers one of the best night life you will get on the island. From bars, to hookah lounges and clubs, you’ll be in for the night of your life.
Two Brothers Bar in specific was mine and my husband’s favorite bar which turned into a full on dance scene later in the night. They offer a variety of drinks, music and hookah flavors. Their staff is the friendliest, fun bunch of people you will meet on the island.
Santorini will always hold a special place in my heart because it’s where my husband and I spent our honeymoon. It is everything you can wish for in a dream vacation, it has more to offer than I shared and it’s something that you have to experience for yourself.
From their vibrant culture, to their unique way of welcoming others, to their breathtaking sights and intriguing history, Santorini has something to offer to everyone. Whether you are on your honeymoon, an all girls/guys trip, a family vacation, there is a mood and ambience that will satisfy everyone.
